UGANDA retained their African Netball Championship crown in Lusaka on Saturday to earn their place at next year’s Netball World Cup in England.
Zimbabwe also booked their ticket to Liverpool 2019 after placing third to join South Africa and Malawi, who had already qualified by virtue of their high rankings on the continent prior to the tournament.
Malawi, who were the runners-up in Zambia, had already qualified, while Zimbabwe, despite finishing third, also qualified for the World Cup.
The Ugandan She-Cranes finished the tournament unbeaten, amassing a maximum 12 points from their six matches while Malawi, Zimbabwe and host Zambia were all tied on eight points each. But the two visiting countries had better goal differences than the hosts.
Namibia, Botswana and Kenya propped up the table, in that order.
Namibia’s Desert Jewels lost five of their six matches at the games, winning only their encounter against debutants Kenya.
They lost 47-86 to Malawi on Friday, 44-61 to Zimbabwe on Thursday in their third game of the tournament and 47-72 to Uganda in their opening match on Tuesday.
On Saturday, Namibia went down 56-59 to Botswana and 76-52 against Zambia.
