Unam returned to winning ways in the Women’s Rugby League after posting a convincing 36-0 victory against Rehoboth at the Unam Stadium on Saturday.
Unam had suffered successive defeats to Wanderers (20-8) and United (15-7) earlier this month, but on Saturday put in a powerful display against Rehoboth to close in on the log leaders.
Unam attacked from the outset and soon took control after two early tries. Their burly eighthman Mandy Hansen crashed over from a scrum after only three minutes, while prop forward Eunice Pollmann barged over after taking a quick tap-penalty, and with rightwing Fiola Vliete converting both they went 14-0 ahead after only seven minutes.
After numerous stoppages due to injuries, collapsing scrums and penalties, Unam went 21-0 ahead after a great solo try by Vliete just before halftime, after she left the defence clutching at thin air with her incisive sidesteps.
Substitute wing Ivonne Kooper took centre stage with two fine tries in the second half. She first went over in the corner after a bullocking run by prop forward Yasmin Abdul-Karim, and then turned on the pace to cut through Rehoboth’s defence for her second try.
Vliete missed both conversions, kicking into a strong wind, but launched a great counter-attack in the closing stages, which led to centre Elzanne-Lee Basson’s try to seal an impressive 36-0 victory.
The win put Unam third on the log on 36 points from nine matches, and with matches in hand on the leaders, they can still close the gap.
Wanderers lead the log on 49 points from 11 matches, followed by United on 42 points from 10 matches.
