Unam summons student political activists for political march on campus

Simon Namesho

The University of Namibia (Unam) says it has summoned a group of student activists who participated in an unauthorised march at its main campus on Friday to provide an explanation.

The students were seen marching on the campus grounds wearing Swapo regalia and chanting Swapo slogans.

The university in April issued a countywide ban of political activities on all its 12 campuses.

Unam spokesperson Simon Namesho told The Namibian that the university is aware of the march.

Namesho says the university’s ban on political activities on all Unam campuses remains firmly in place.

“The students involved in the gathering have been summoned by the Directorate of Student Affairs to provide an explanation, and appropriate corrective actions will be considered,” Namesho says.

He adds that Unam upholds its commitment to maintaining a neutral environment for all students, ensuring that the rights of individuals, irrespective of political affiliation, are respected.

CONDEMNED

Various political parties such as the Popular Democratic Movement Youth League and the Landless People’s Movement have condemned the actions, calling for immediate investigations.
