Unam women stake their claim

UNAM’s women staked their claim in the Bank Windhoek Hockey Premier League title race, when they moved up to second place after beating DTS 4-0 on Tuesday evening.

Unam held a narrow 1-0 lead at the break after a goal by Maggie Mengo, but two goals by Lidia Simon and Judith Anton in the third chukka put them in charge, before Mengo added her second goal in the final chukka.

The result sees Unam moving up to second place on the log, and after an inauspicious start to the season, they have now emerged as strong title contenders.

Unam join Wanderers on 19 points, but go second on the log due to their better goal aggregate.

Saints still lead the log on 23 points, but Unam have a match in hand and have built up momentum as the season has progressed.

Since losing 4-0 to Saints in their opening match of the season, Unam have gone on an unbeaten run of six matches, which includes a last-gasp 2-1 win against Saints last weekend.

Saints, who at a stage led the log by eight points, are now looking vulnerable at the top.

The Men’s Premier League is also heading for an exciting finale after DTS joined Windhoek Old Boys at the top of the log, with a 3-0 win against Unam on Tuesday night.

After a goalless first half, DTS stepped up the tempo and goals by William De Ath, Leonard Fick and Henry Venter saw them joining WOB on 22 points, although Old Boys have two matches in hand.

Saints, who are third on 21 points, also have a match in hand on DTS, setting up a tight finale with all three teams still in the running for league honours. WOB, however, hold the advantage with two matches in hand.

Premier League action continues on Thursday night with Saints’ men playing Wanderers at Windhoek Gymnasium’s Aloe Park at 19h30, while WOB’s men (19h20) and women (18h00) play NUST at the WHS pitch.
