Unemployment drives demand for drugs

Namibian police confiscated cannabis with a street value of N$177000 on Wednesday on the B3 road between Ariaamsvlei and Karasberg in the //Kharas region.

Acting //Kharas crime investigations coordinator Douglas Hanse said police reacted to a tip-off from community members about a vehicle heading to Karasberg from Ariamsvlei.

Hanse said the vehicle was identified and intercepted about 20km from Karasberg. “Eleven parcels of drugs were found in the vehicle,” said Hanse.

Two men and one woman were arrested and charged for dealing in cannabis. They are expected to appear in the Karasburg court on Friday.

This is the third drug bust this week during which police found either cannabis or mandrax smuggled into the country through the Ariamsvlei border post.

On Tuesday police also reported a bust in which 55 parcels of mandrax with a street value of N$6.6 million were found in a truck at the Ariamsvlei weighbridge border post. A 35-year-old Namibian man was arrested and charged for dealing in dager inducing substances. He is expected to appear in the Karasburg court on Friday.

Hanse said there is a high demand for drugs in the country. “People are looking for ways to make money. Due to job losses from Covid-19 and other reasons. However police are aware of this and that the Ariamsvlei border post is often used to smuggle the drugs. Therefore we have strengthened our crime prevention in that area, he said.

A week ago cannabis with a street value of N$1,77 million was confiscated at the same weighbridge and two suspects were arrested.
