Local fashion designer, founder and creative director of King_A_Apparel, Armando van Wyk, reflects on the journey his brand has taken since inception in 2020 and what the future holds as he continues to push the boundaries of fashion.
King_A_Apparel was born out of the Covid-19 lockdowns. With more time on his hands, Van Wyk wanted to create something meaningful. He started by designing fabric masks, which eventually grew into a full-fledged fashion brand.
“What started as a way to stay productive and generate income during a difficult time has transformed into a brand that represents self-expression, confidence and inclusivity,” says Van Wyk.
Over the years, the designer says his brand has made significant strides in the fashion industry, gaining recognition and a loyal following.
The brand’s commitment to empowering individuals through fashion has led to major milestones, including showcases at Katutura Fashion Week in 2022 and MTC Fashion Week in 2023 and 2024.
These appearances, he says, have helped establish the brand as a key player in the Namibian fashion scene.
“It felt amazing to be recognised for something that I pour my heart and soul into,” Van Wyk shares.
“Being nominated as favourite fashion designer of the year at the Simply You Magazine Fashion and Lifestyle Awards in 2024 was an honour.”
He adds that one of the high moments for King_A_Apparel had to be its international debut during Batho Fashion Week 2024 in Gaborone, Botswana.
“Representing Namibia on a global platform was surreal,” notes Van Wyk.
“It was testament to the hard work and passion which has driven King_A_Apparel from its inception.”
The collection showcased during Batho Fashion Week, named ‘Tashley’, held deep personal meaning for Van Wyk.
It was a tribute to his niece who died earlier in the year. The collection explored themes of loss, grief and healing, using black to symbolise mourning and white to represent peace and hope.
“It was a healing process for me,” Van Wyk says. “To see my work resonate with others in such an emotional way was truly overwhelming.”
Looking ahead, Van Wyk says he remains determined to keep innovating and evolving within the fashion industry.
“I’m excited about what’s to come in 2025. There are more collaborations on the horizon, and I’m considering launching an all-male collection,” he reveals.
“I believe men deserve more representation in fashion and I want to create something that speaks to them.”
As King_A_Apparel enters a new year, Van Wyk draws inspiration from his journey. “I’ve always lived by the saying ‘begin with the end in mind,’” he says.
“Success doesn’t come overnight, but persistence pays off. There’s always someone watching and your voice matters in this industry.”
With a commitment to pushing boundaries and staying true to his vision, Van Wyk is excited for what lies ahead in 2025.
“This year is going to be another milestone for King_A_Apparel and I can’t wait to continue the journey,” he says.
