Voter registration draws to a close

Voter registration draws to a close

AN estimated 141 000 people have registered for the November elections over the past two weeks, the Electoral Commission of Namibia announced yesterday.

Elections Director Moses Ndjarakana said the supplementary registration brought the total number or registered voters in Namibia to around 1,14 million.Prospective voters have until 21h00 tonight to register.Ndjarakana said they used the national population projection figures to estimate the number of people who were expected to register over the past two weeks.According to those statistics, the ECN expected around 200 000 people to register for the supplementary registration. The 141 000 excluded people who registered in the Erongo Region, as electoral officials were still verifying the figures there, while Oshana’s numbers did not include those who registered after September 23.The cut-off for the 141 000 was Sunday.Ndjarakana said 25 600 people registered in Khomas, followed by 22 900 in Ohangwena and 15 548 in Kavango. Hardap had the lowest number of 5 067 registrations.According to ECN estimates, Khomas have 190 967 eligible voters so far, followed by 132 798 from Ohangwena, 128 026 from Omusati and 119 264 from Kavango. The numbers can change after tonight’s deadline and when the final figures of Erongo and Oshana are added.
