Walvis police engage shebeens, tuck shops on challenges

Shebeens, tuck shops and car wash owners met with the police at Kuisebmond on Tuesday to discuss challenges.

They were urged to build partnerships with the police to ensure community safety.

Erongo regional police commander commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona said the police encounter challenges with the public, shebeens, tuck shops and car washes in upholding law and order.

“Normal tuck shops have now also become like shebeens. They are not allowed to operate for 24 hours. They are like normal supermarkets. They need to be closed by 10 o’clock.

“We have observed that some are selling drugs, alcohol and even have jukeboxes,” he said.

Issues such as liquor licences and the risk of keeping large amounts of cash on business premises were also discussed.
