What’s Good, Windhoek?

Spring is about to do its thing and the city’s social calendar is teeming with arts, entertainment and fitness events ready to welcome the capital to the new season. Here’s a round-up of what’s good in Windhoek this weekend.

National Literary Festival of Namibia

Bookworms are invited to the National Archives of Namibia for a free literature festival. The festival will take place from 1 to 2 September and includes workshops on memoir and creative writing and publishing, as well as author readings and performances. Night Under the Stars

Jazz enthusiasts, rejoice! Then head to Goethe-Institut Namibia for a jumping evening of live electro and swing jazz with Yola B featuring Gareth Harvey and Riaan Smit on 1 September. Tickets are available at the door and things begin at 19h00.

Da Broad Wear and Honeycassie Designs Pop Up Market

It’s a birthday celebration between fashion friends as the two clothing brands light up Chicago’s in collaboration with MTC Fashion Week on 1 September. The event will include limited edition streetwear sales and will feature DJ Spuzza, Erro, Azaria, AzmoNawe, DJ Solange, Zottie the DJ, Showtime, Zonesh, DJ Claudio and DJ Wildkid.

Neighbourhood Night Market
The monthly night market at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre returns this evening featuring DJ DLA. The invitation is to indulge in delicious street food, browse unique stalls and enjoy the live entertainment. Tickets are on sale at the door and the event starts at 17h00.

Frankly Speaking
Poetry is the name of the game at Muso’s Café and Bar tonight as a band of bards ignite another episode of Frankly Speaking. Featuring North Side Rabbi, Anilopoet, 44 Times, Damn Etu and Mr_Poet, the ticketed event is set to be a soulful session and starts at 18h00.

BeFree Youth Concert
All roads lead to Katutura’s Independence Arena today for the BeFree Youth Concert to celebrate the opening of the BeFree Youth Campus today. Musical guests for the ticketed event are Master KG, Mas Musiq, King Tee Dee, Gazza, KP Illest, Patrick Sikiliza, Tswazis, DJ Siya, Adora, Musketeers, DJ Vuyo, Sally Boss Madam, TopCheri, Dee’A, Azmo, Tate Buti, Waters, PhatBoy Lutor, Yeezir, Slaughterhouze, Big Ben, DJ Luzendo, Dama Monique, Kalux, DJ Erro, Manxebe, Waters, Vaughn Ahrens and One Blood. Gates open at 15h00.

Deep Dive Seafood Festival
On 2 September, seafood lovers can jump into The Deep Dive Seafood and Wine Festival at Trustco United Sports Field. The ticketed and family friendly festival will include a variety of food and beverage stalls, a kiddies’ play area and live performances. Join the festivities from 11h00.

The Ells at Goodfellas

If you miss them at the seafood festival, catch The Ells at Goodfellas on 2 September. The rocking duo recently released ‘Journey’, their first single, which is bound to be part of the party from 18h00 on Saturday. Eats for the evening are Goodfellas’ signature burgers, pizzas, pastas, nachos and more.

Big Walk and Fitness Day

Windhoek Central Primary School encourages you to get up and go during their active day out on 2 September. The event will feature dance fitness, karaoke, a colour party, disco and soccer games, as well as face painting, a jumping castle and waterslide for the children.

Spring Things

What’s a celebration of spring without a paint and sip session? Et Cetera asks that you get your tickets and unleash your inner artist at ‘A Celebration of Colour’ from 14h00 to 21h00 at the Old Breweries complex on
2 September.

Club Renaissance 2

Volume 2 of the Secret Sunrise Namibia event will blend music from the acclaimed Beyoncé album with live performances by Selena Dash, Coco Critique, Ava Le’More and Keith Black on Sunday, 3 September. The dress code is ‘your most fabulous silver garments’ and the venue is Et Cetera at the Old Breweries Complex. Tickets are limited.

The Village Sunday Market

Lize Ehlers is the vamp with the voice at this weekend’s Village Sunday Market. The ticketed and family friendly bazaar is on from 09h00 to 15h00 and features a kiddies’ play area, a variety of food, fresh produce, arts, crafts, clothing and thrift stalls as well as scrumptious eats from The Village Garden.

Indigenous Sport Game Tournament

A tournament of games such as ‘Egongo’, ‘Oviritje’ and ‘Nama Damara Stick Fighting’ will take place at Palm Tree Park this Sunday, 3 September. Showcasing indigenous games passed down for generations, the event invites teams to enter for a fee in a bid to “unite communities in the spirit of competition and cultural preservation”. ‘Under the Hanging Tree’ at Ster-Kinekor
After last night’s premiere, Perivi John Katjavivi’s highly anticipated Namibian noir will be on show at Ster-Kinekor this weekend and until 6 September. ‘Under the Hanging Tree’ (2023) stars Girley Jazama, Dawie Engelbrecht, Roya Diehl and David Ndjavera and is described as “Herero mysticism meets kick-ass female cop solving crime meets exorcism of German colonial history trauma”.
