THE community of Luederitz enjoyed an amusing weekend with the Wheelbarrow Run held on Saturday.
Teams consisting of two members and a decorated wheelbarrow took the town by storm, competing for the prize for the best-decorated wheelbarrow. The spectacle was organised to raise funds for uniforms for the town’s Garde Girls to strut their stuff at next year’s Lueka carnival, an event that is held in Luederitz every other year. The race started at Rumours Sports Bar and continued through town with 30-minute “refuelling” pit stops taken at the German Club, Yacht Club, Barrels and Butcher’s Grill before the chequered flag was waved at the starting point.Johan Schoombee and Marilynne James carted off the first prize for their ‘Luederitz ambulance’ while Tony and Alfonso Ferreira won the second place in their ‘Santa’s sleigh’ wheelbarrow.Playing mother and child, Wendy von Schweinitz and Perrie Kasten finished in third place with their multi-purpose wheelbarrow-cum-pram.Michael and Patrick van Zyl earned a consolation prize for the Road Cleaners Association after Michael ended up spread-eagled on the asphalt when the modifications to their wheelbarrow proved to be unsound. The organisers thanked the sponsors: all the bars, clubs and restaurants that provided the pit stops, Kapps Hotel, Cymot, VO Security, South African Breweries, Franci Carney, the Luederitz Town Council and Police Department.
