WINDHOEK High School’s rugby, netball, tennis and hockey teams recently toured to Port Elizabeth in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.
About 180 pupils, coaches and parents travelled by road over 24 hours to Port Elizabeth. Three hockey girls’ teams and one boys’ team played a total of 12 games (three matches per team), of which they won eleven and drew one.According to national women’s team hockey coach Erwin Handura, the results show that the hockey development programme is on the right track. In their first match, the Windhoek High School boys demolished DF Malherbe10-0, before they went on to beat Daniel Pienaar 5-0 in their following match. In the third match, the visitors found the going tough and only managed to win by a solitary goal as they beat a tough HS Framesby side. The Windhoek High School girls’ first team opened their tour with a 1-1 draw against DF Malherbe, before ousting Despatch HS with a solitary goal in their next match. In the second encounter against HS Framesby, the WHS girls recorded a 4-0 victory. The girls’ second team (2A) beat DF Malherbe 4-1 in their opening match, before they went on to oust Despatch HS with a single goal.Their third and last match saw them going past HS Framesby with a fantastic 5-0 win.The third WHS team (2B) came out tops over DF Malherbe with a 2-0 win, before they dispatched Despatch HS with one goal to nil in their second match.HS Framesby was also no match for the second WHS team, as they were routed 0-2 in their game.Handura said the tour served as preparation for all WHS teams for the winter programme due to start as soon as the schools re-open later this month.”The girls’ first team are the current holders of the National Field League Title and the tour was the ideal preparation to defend the title which they’ve for the past three years running,” he said.Meanwhile, Handura has announced that the Indoor Hockey African Cup of Nations scheduled to take place from today until May 7 in Walvis Bay has been postponed. This tournament is a continental qualifying event for the 2007 Indoor World Cup scheduled for February 14 to 18 in Vienna, Austria. For Africa to have a representative team at the Indoor World Cup next year, the African Cup of Nations Tournament must be held before the end of August this year.Handura said the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU) is waiting for a new date from the African Hockey Federation to stage this event in Walvis Bay.Only Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe have confirmed participation at this stage.Handura said other factors also led to the postponement of the tournament. He said countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Botswana could not send teams to compete at the event because their governments had already made funds available for the Commonwealth Games in March.Three hockey
