I’ve heard the utterance in and out of the school environment from pupils, that education isn’t for everyone.
Where our country is at the moment in terms of the marketing industry and employment opportunities, and the small population we have, getting educated is the only path. Why do I say so?
I’m very much aware of the prevalent situation of having graduated yet being unemployed. But until we realise that the government doesn’t owe us anything and that we should rather do something about it or the situation will stay the same.
This is because the government can’t cater for everybody. It spends a lot of money on the free primary and secondary education initiative. It also has an initiative to aid tertiary students to pay for their tuition and non-tuition fees through loans. Seeing this, it can thus be concluded that the purpose of getting educated is that we can apply theory into practice, without having to wait for jobs to present themselves.
Before making something out of ourselves, we require the skills we acquired in school, so that we can create jobs for ourselves where there are none.
Is it easy under our economy? Absolutely not!
I can conclude that in order to master skills being taught in classrooms across all fields, so that we can actually apply them and make a contribution towards the country, society and ourselves, we should take our education seriously, and make use of the opportunities given to us.
There are so many complaints and murmurs of what’s wrong in our country; what’s being done and what’s not being done, which we have the right to complain about, but for most part, we need to realise the change we seek. Only we can bring it to existence as the apparent future leaders.
The complaining hasn’t brought much change anyway. The future of the country rests on the shoulders of the youth. Where it requires us being educated to solve these issues, and most of the time it does, so let’s do so.
Lastly, because we are privileged in terms of schools.
In other countries it’s a requirement to pay for a child’s education. Many children end up not fully having the luxury of education. There are cases where they have to be absent from school because of money not being enough or available, which often results in them dropping out.
Education, at a substantial level, is one of the greatest and most assured paths through which a child can bring their dream into reality. We are privileged in Namibia to have it for free at primary and secondary level, as well as aid at tertiary level.
