Windhoek Annual Cultural Festival preparations underway

ORGANISERS of the first-ever Windhoek Annual Cultural Festival (WACF) recently announced it is scheduled to take place at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek from 26 to 30 June, and 10% of proceeds will go to charity.

Speaking at the launch in Windhoek, founder Sylvester Shapwa said his goal was to empower communities through culture. “Culture speaks for itself and that’s what makes up this initiative.”

The idea, Shapwa said, came from a conversation he had about how young people in the city are losing their cultural values, so he wanted to create a platform where people can learn more about Namibian culture and other international parties who are expected to take part in the festival.

Co-organiser Kleophas Malima stated WACF will be hosted at the stadium as a way of paying homage to the roots of Namibian culture. “It’s central to where there the masses of the city are and it’s also because we’re taking into consideration the crowd we’re aiming to pull.”

The name of the festival, Malima said, is inspired by the city and how diverse it is, hence the theme – ‘diversity’. “It’s not just about tradition, but every single aspect,” Malima said. “We’re going to have talent shows and bring services closer to the people.”

Phil Nepando, also an organiser, hinted at several activities including a fireworks night, a battle of the choirs show as well as a variety of performances by local artists.
