The Windhoek City Police say they do not intend to criminalise street vendors, but to rather enforce safety and order in the capital.
Superintendent Marcelline Murapo said this in response to concerns over the harassment and criminalisation of informal traders raised in a motion adopted in the National Assembly last week.
“We fully understand the economic reality that drives individuals to street trading, and we do not seek to criminalise anyone’s efforts to earn a living,” she said on Tuesday. Murapo said the police focus on maintaining safety, order, and adherence to regulations.
She, however, said if specific concerns exist or allegations are made, investigations could be conducted. She said they also ensure that enforcement actions are conducted professionally, respecting human dignity.
“We encourage all traders to familiarise themselves with the applicable regulations and work with us to ensure compliance,” Murapo said.
