Windhoek Gymnasium dominates schools netball

WINDHOEK Gymnasium underlined its status as Namibia's top netball school when it won five of the six titles on offer at the Capricorn Schools Netball League finals on Saturday.

In the u19 final, Windhoek Gymnasium initially received strong resistance from Ella du Plessis Secondary School before easing to a 31-23 victory to take the title.

In the semifinals, Windhoek Gym beat A Shipena Secondary School 23-16, while Ella du Plessis beat Pro-Ed Academy 31-21.

In the third-place play-off, Pro Ed beat A Shipena 32-26.

Windhoek Gymnasium also won the u17 title after beating Otjiwarongo Secondary School 20-5 in the final, while Walvis Bay Private School finished third after beating Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool 18-14.

In the semifinals, Windhoek Gym beat Walvis Bay Private School 38-16, and Otjiwarongo beat WAP 18-15.

In the u15 final, Windhoek Gymnasium beat Ella du Plessis 27-18, while Gobabis Gymnasium came third after beating Windhoek High School 30-29.

Windhoek Gymnasium secured the u14 title after beating WAP 26-8 in the final, while WHS beat Tsumeb Secondary School 12-10 to finish third.

Windhoek Gymnasium also won the u13 title after beating Pro Ed Academy 24-13 in the final, while WAP beat Parkies 19-7 in the third place play-off.

The only title that Windhoek Gymnasium did not win was in the u12 category, where WAP beat Walvis Bay Private School 16-13 in the final, while Edugate beat Pro Ed Academy 14-4 in the third place play-off.

The national netball league carries the official endorsement of the Namibia Schools Sport Union and is regarded as the official national school league for netball A teams in Namibia.

A total of 16 schools and 47 teams with about 450 players ranging from age groups u12 to u19 competed for the national title of Capricorn Group Schools Netball 2022 winners in their respective age groups.

The matches commenced on 20 May in Windhoek and continued throughout June, July and August with the playoffs taking place over the past weekend.

“We are proud to continue our legacy of being connectors of positive change by enabling a platform like this where netball teams from all over Namibia can compete, grow and develop,” said Marelize Horn of the Capricorn Group.

Solly Duiker, the national coordinator of the NSSU and Liezel Garbers, chairperson of the Capricorn Group Schools Netball League both expressed their gratitude to the Capricorn Group, the participating teams and their schools and parents for a rewarding league with great sportsmanship throughout.
