Windhoek Old Boys go six points clear

THE Bank Windhoek Indoor Hockey Men’s Premier League log-leaders Windhoek Old Boys (WOB) pulled further away from the chasing pack when they collected maximum points over the weekend.

The defending champions beat arch-rivals DTS 6-5 in a thriller that saw Siabonga Martins scoring five goals including the late winner, while they also beat their B team 5-2 to open up a six-point gap at the top of the log.

The encounter against DTS was a close and tense affair as the teams went into half time all square at 3-all.

David Britz gave DTS the lead but WOB struck back with three goals in three minutes (two by Siabonga Martins and one by Dylan Finch) to go 3-1 ahead.

DTS responded with goals by William De’Ath and a Leonard Fick short corner to go into halftime all square at 3-3.

WOB edged ahead with another two goals by Martins, but DTS pulled back with goals by Britz and De’Ath to draw level at 5-5, before Martins scored the winning goal with three minutes to go.

Earlier WOB A beat WOB B team 5-2 with Martins and Bucko Bartlett scoring two goals each. They obtained bonus points in both their matches to maintain their unbeaten status and extend their lead at the top of the log to 28 points.

Saints, who were not in action over the weekend are second on 22 points although they have a match in hand, while DTS are third on 20 points.

Unam moved up to fourth place on 17 points after collecting three victories over the weekend. They beat Wanderers 4-2 in a tough encounter, but then picked up two bonus-point victories against WOB B (6-1), with Sascha Chioza scoring a brace, and NUST (6-2).

Wanderers bounced back from their Unam defeat in fine fashion when they thumped Nust 13-1 on Saturday evening.

Wanderers overpowered Nust’s defence from the start to run away with the game, while Owen Hatton was their top scorer with five goals.

In an encounter between the basement teams WOB B and Nust played to a 2-2 draw, with Johan Serfontein scoring both Old Boys goals.

In the Women’s Premier League, Unam narrowed the gap on log leaders Saints, but failed to get a bonus point after beating a stubborn Nust 4-0. The result saw Unam moving up to two points behind Saints on 24 points, although Saints, who did not play over the weekend, have a match in hand.

In the only other Women’s Premier League match, a full-strength WOB comfortably beat DTS 8-0 with Marcia Kruger and Jiwantwa Kruger both scoring hat-tricks.
