The City of Windhoek has issued a warning to residents to prepare for flash floods amid increased rains.
In a notice issued on Thursday, the municipality said due to the geographical area in which Windhoek is located, the city is likely to experience flash floods, which is a “common natural disaster during this time”.
Flash floods occur when heavy rain is received in a specific area over a short period of time. The floods are mostly experienced in low-lying areas, places close to rivers and those downstream from dams.
The municipality said high risk areas include Arebbusch Street in Cimbebasia, Pelican Street in Hochland Park and several streets in Eros, Katutura and Nubuamis.
“Residents should clear trash and garden waste from drainage systems to stop blockages. People living in areas that are often flooded are advised to gather emergency items like sandbags and plastic sheets,” said City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya.
According to Amutenya, if residents are indoors in the event of a flood, they are advised to listen to a battery-powered radio for updates and leave their houses immediately when told to evacuate.
“Those outdoors during the flash floods are advised to move to higher ground right away.”
Amutenya urged residents not to walk through fast-moving water, even if it looks shallow, as it can knock a person over. Motorists have also been advised to avoid driving through flooded areas, follow road signs and leave their car if it stalls in the water in order to get to safety.
“After a flood, residents should inspect their homes carefully before entering. They should be careful of hazards like snakes, gas leaks or weak walls.
“They should also not eat food that has been touched by floodwater and report any issues with water or sewage systems,” noted the municipality.
In cases of crisis, residents can contact the municipality’s emergency management control room at 21 11 11.
