Woman found dead at Walvis Bay beach

An unidentified woman was found dead at Walvis Bay’s Independence Beach on Friday, after a suspected suicide.

According to Erongo police spokesperson chief inspector Ileni Shapumba, the woman was observed by security guards arriving at the beach and sitting on a bench for a while.

“She later went on the shore, came back and went into the public toilets,” Shapumba reported.

“After a while, she came out and collapsed. The security guards who were on duty at the beach observed the incident from a distance and reported it to the police and hospital.”

The woman was taken to a hospital, where a doctor declared her dead on arrival, Shapumba said.

He added that the incident happened around 18h30.

It is suspected that the woman ingested poison.

An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of her death.

The woman was wearing a white jersey, a blue denim jacket, a peach-coloured shirt and trousers and black Adidas sneakers.

The police are asking the public to assist in the investigation by contacting deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu on 081 246 4757, detective inspector Mansie Amamub at 081 724 8668, or any nearby police station.
