Young boxer wins gold in SA

A 17-year-old Namibian boxer, William Smith has excelled by winning a gold medal at the South African Junior Boxing Championships which recently took place in Durban.

Smith, who is the son of former Namibian rugby player Eben Smith, weighs 89kg and won gold in the heavyweight category.

Smith currently studies in Cape Town and trains with MTC Sunshine Promotions when returning to Namibia on holiday.

Namibian boxing promoter Nestor Tobias said he is a great prospect.

“We are excited about William’s recent achievements, and our goal is to get him gold at the next Olympic Games. He is well-built, disciplined and strong, and definitely a talent for the future,” he said.

Smith said he was aiming to pursue a boxing career once he completes his studies.

“I am excited about winning a gold medal in South Africa recently. The competition was tough, but I am tough too. I am looking forward to pursuing a boxing career in Namibia with MTC Sunshine Promotions once I have completed my studies,” he said.

Smith’s father, Eben, played hooker for Namibia’s national rugby team between 1996 and 2003 and represented Namibia at the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
