A woman (22) from the Sikanduko informal settlement at Rundu was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly dumping her newborn in a pit latrine.
Kavango East acting regional commander deputy commissioner Eino Nambahu confirmed the arrest to The Namibian on Wednesday.
He said a case of child abandonment was reported to the Rundu Police station on Monday at around 12h00.
“It’s alleged that the suspect gave birth to a newborn baby in her room and then threw the baby in the pit latrine/toilet. The baby was discovered by a member of the community who wanted to use the toilet and alerted the police,” said Nambahu.
The baby is alive and has been admitted to the Rundu Intermediate Hospital for medical attention in the care of the mother.
The accused is expected to appear in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday
