Youth unemployment 1.4% less than five years ago – NSA

Youth unemployment in the country was 1.4% less in 2023 than in 2018.

Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) senior statistician Onesmus Shalonda on Wednesday announced that the figure has decreased to 44.7% in 2023 from 46,1% in 2018.

The government considers ‘youth’ as everyone from the ages of 15 to 35.

The 44.7% includes this whole category, which is subdivided into categories of young people aged 15 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 30, and 31 to 35.

The youth unemployment rate is higher among those in the 15-to-19-year-old and 20-to-24-year-old categories, which involves 54%.

This means of the 44.7% unemployed young people in Namibia, 54% are between the ages of 15 and 24.

The unemployment rate is lower among people aged 55 to 59, at 19.4 %, and higher among pensioners (those aged 60 and older).

Shalonda was speaking at the launch of Namibia’s labour statistics for 2023.
