The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) in the Zambezi region has procured 260 vehicles and two helicopters to be used for transportation ahead of tomorrow’s presidential and National Assembly elections.
Regional electoral officer Lesley Simwanza revealed this during an interview with The Namibian on Monday.
He said 271 vehicles are being hired for the elections and they have so far procured about 95% of the fleet required.
Registration is ongoing and they are confident that they will be able to procure all the vehicles needed, he added.
“As for the two helicopters, we will use them to start transporting [both] the sensitive election material and non-sensitive material to remote areas such as Impalila Island and flood-prone areas,” he said.
Simwanza further said the procurement of generators, tents, chairs and other materials is also complete.
He noted that of the
1 003 polling officials, 95% did well in the written test, which is an indication that the election process will go smoothly.
“We also selected the presiding officers based on the highest performance in the test and our returning officers also went through thorough training,” he said.
He implored residents that have lost their voter’s cards to get a police declaration in order to get a duplicate card as soon as possible so that they can vote in tomorrow’s election.
“We have so far only issued 20 duplicate cards in the Katima Mulilo Urban constituency. The rural constituencies have not issued any duplicate voter’s cards.”
He said they have 221 polling stations in the region, with 141 teams.
