Zambian artist Yo Maps released from custody

Lawyer Kadhila Amoomo has shared on social media that Zambian artist Elton Mulenga has been released from custody.

The artist, popularly known as Yo Maps, was detained in Namibia, but was released on Monday.

Yo Maps was detained on Saturday over an alleged employment permit violation.

His release follows mounting pressure from fans who took to social media, calling for him to be freed.

The artist performed at a local club in Windhoek at an event called Zambian Nights over the weekend.

A Zambian institution, Crowd Intelligence Services’ senior intelligence officer, Nathan Lungu, wrote a letter to the Namibian government pleading for the artist’s release.

In the letter, dated 15 July, Lungu said the arrest has not only impacted the artist’s professional commitments, but also caused him significant distress.

“We believe that Yo Maps’ intent was purely to entertain and contribute to the cultural tapestry of Namibia. His presence not only delights audiences, but also contributes economically through event revenues, thereby benefiting both Namibian and Zambian communities,” he said.

The artist toured Namibia in December.
